Only active bands

Burning Brides were formed in 1999 by guitar player/vocalist/songwriter Dimitri Coats and bassist Melanie Campbell when the 2 former Julliard students (he an actor, she a dancer) went travelling the U.S. looking for the ideal place to start a band, eventually stopping in Philadelphia where the band released its hook laden debut album "Fall of the Plastic Empire." A joyriding beast of a record that, combined with a fast growing reputation for their energetic live shows quickly saw the band going national and then overseas on a long run of ever increasingly high profile tours. Sharing stages with Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, etc, and culminating with 2003's Lollapalooza festival which saw the power trio garner yet more raves for their trancendent live shows. Now 2004 brings us the new album "Leave No Ashes". The record not only manages to fullfill all the promise of "Empire" it one ups damn near every other record released so far this year-scratch that-this decade-that's right, "Leave No Ashes", produced by the Brides with legendary producer George Drakoulious (Black Crowes, Tom Petty) streamlines and finely hones every element that made its predecessor so great and then kicks it all up several dozen notches - imagine equal parts garage rock swagger, sleaze metal hook, britpop melody and classic alternative rock crunch thrown together in pile-up on the turnpike and you'll start to get the idea here:"Leave No Ashes" is a dark, majestic masterpiece the likes of which we don't often see these days, great from end to end and while the bands' influences are worn on its sleeves, this music is never derivitive, always fresh. Take for instance the opener "Heart Full of Black," it tears out of the gate like the hellraising bastard spawn of Cheap Trick's drug-fuelled one night fuck fest with ZZ Top, but far easier to look at, while "Pleasure in the Pain" could be Ray Davies on his darkest day. Closing track, "Vampire Waltz" comes across like crazy horse in the apocalyptic aftermath of an epic bender, with Coats singing as though he's the one out for blood. Every song here is a stone fucking monster: these are tunes that stick in your head long after the record is done, beautiful and dark, powerful and compelling........perfect. Local H is the best-known for their unorthodox two-man lineup, hard rock act they has made a career out of straddling the fine line between indie and classic rock, cleverly framing their sardonic lyrics with a generous helping of power chords and feedback.
Scott Lucas (vocals/guitar) and Joe Daniels (drums) began playing together in high school in their native Zion, IL. Finding a suitable bassist proved an insurmountable challenge, so the industrious Lucas eventually devised a way to install bass pick-ups into his six-string. Armed with this intriguing novelty setup, the duo signed with Island Records and made their recording debut on 1995's Ham Fisted, a rather unoriginal disc which had some detractors tagging them as Nirvana wannabes. Its follow-up, 1996's much improved As Good As Dead, was another story, however, considerably expanding the band's sonic palette and firmly establishing their identity as Midwestern ironists supreme. Led by well-crafted power pop radio singles like "Bound for the Floor" and "Eddie Vedder," the album was eventually certified gold and helped earn the duo their alt-rock cred, while simultaneously validating their contradictory ties to classic hard rock. Though less-focused and not quite as immediate, 1998's still solid Pack Up the Cats seemed set to maintain the band's rising momentum. But record company woes (Island's parent company Polygram was in the process of being absorbed by Universal Music) effectively clipped the band at the knees, the album became lost in the shuffle, and Local H went on a near three-year hiatus. In the interim, Daniels left the band under amicable circumstances and was replaced by former Triple Fast Action drummer (and Bun E. Carlos drum tech) Brian St. Clair.
Lucas and St. Clair returned in 2000 with a new album and a new label. Here Comes the Zoo (Palm Pictures) featured more of the Midwestern angst and cutting satire that had always defined Lucas' hard rock, but added the busier drumming style of St.Clair. Incessant touring followed; in 2003, the duo returned once again with the No Fun EP for the Chicago punk imprint Thick. The band's fifth album, Whatever Happened to P.J. Nine Black Alps Manchester, England's Nine Black Alps features Sam Forrest (vocals/guitar), James Galley (drums/vocals), Martin Cohen (bass), and David Jones (guitar). The indie rock foursome came together in 2003, taking their name from a line in the Sylvia Plath poem "The Couriers." Two years later, Nine Black Alps inked a record deal with Island in the U.K. Their debut album, Everything Is, arrived that June. A U.S. record deal with Interscope and a self-titled EP followed in July. Tours with the Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, and Weezer as well as festival appearances at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Reading, and Leeds coincided with the success of such Top 40 singles as "Shot Down," "Not Everyone," "Unsatisfied," and "Just Friends." Navel The 3 members of navel first gathered in the early 2003 to join on some of jari's ideas and soon thereafter started to practise regulary. it didn't take them much time to get the rock rolling as they all had been making music and playing in serveral bands before. since the first appearance in may 2003, navel have played about 50 local venues as well as open air festivals in switzerland and germany, and released their first 7-track ep/cd "tribute to mr. hank". patrick (bass) left navel for his filming studies. ef is replacing patrick with charming work on bass. swiss national radio station drs 3 played the demo song "black sheep", other radios followed. now, the song "I could see this gift" is part of the berlin movie "stadt-als-beute" ("berlin stories"), which was shown at the "berlinale 05" in berlin. the original movie soundtrack at normal records germany is also released. following their philosophy to be as energetic and intense as possible, the band is never standing still, always looking out for new musical ways to get their emotions and ideas across. they don't want to be reduced to one style or associated with a certain image and although they are not ashamed to admit that the music of the grunge era is a major influence on their work. by listening carefully to their music this becomes obvious: there is punk, hardcore, pop, metal, noise and even funk popping up in their sound. they pick up whatever works best and feels exciting to them and then turn it into their own personal thing. but it is one thing to write about music. the much more important thing is to enjoy it. convince yourself!
